Counselling for Young People

Supportive counselling for young people in Stockport

Being a young person can be incredibly good fun at times and unfortunately incredibly tough too.  As well as all the relationship dynamics, school pressures and family woes that come with being a teen, physiologically hormones are fizzing and popping all over the place.

If your child is struggling to manage their thoughts, feelings or behaviours then therapy could benefit them. Providing counselling for young people in Stockport is one of my specialist areas.  I’ve worked with secondary school aged children for over 10 years, providing mental health support and helping young people build up resilience, and develop coping strategies.

Children and young people can experience similar difficulties to adults.  The list below is by no  means comprehensive but a flavour of what some children bring to counselling.

  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Low self esteem
  • Body image difficulties
  • Eating problems
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Bereavement
  • OCD
  • Panic attacks
  • Trauma
  • Self harm
  • Drug use

Stockport Psychotherapy views counselling for young people and children differently to counselling adults.  Children often haven’t built up as much resilience as adults and sometimes they need a bit of help putting their feelings into words.  This process is called emotional literacyNot only do I help children and young people become emotionally literate I offer family sessions.  These sessions enable families to open channels of communication and become their own best resource.

Adolescents engage with me because I use creative age appropriate psychotherapeutic approaches, allowing them to tell their story, reflect on their experiences and make positive changes when necessary.

I have a real passion for working with children and adolescents and believe all young people deserve to have a voice and be heard.

I work with children aged 12+.  If you’re looking for counselling for young people in Stockport contact Stockport Counselling and Psychotherapy for a free telephone consultation on 07908 710526.
